Quite often these are missing on older engines and can risk damage to your manifold. VW engineers added parts for a reason, not just to spend more money building the cars! Some of the manifolds may have some corrosion pitting on them, but they were thoroughly blasted to remove any corrosion products and zinc plated to prevent any from coming back.
